Hip Hop Diplomas?

Funny that if Kanye West had of went and registered at Smith McNally, he might not have been a College Dropout. The St. Paul, Minnesota music school will be kicking off their Fall 2009 semester with the first ever accredited college level diploma in the area of hip hop music and culture.

Coordinated and instructed by emcee and organizer Toki Wright, the Hip-Hop Studies diploma will give students the skills and the knowledge that are crucial in pursuing a career in the hip-music industry and community. The three semester program designed to be completed in a year will teach students the techniques in beat production and engineering, the language of rap and spoken word, as well as music history and theory. Founded in 1985 McNally Smith College of Music is dedicated to teaching their students excellence in higher education by offering a variety of music degrees. Southern HBCU Tops #1 Producer Of Black Degree Holders

Located in Tallahassee Florida, right around the corner from Division 1 school Florida State University, you'll find Florida A&M University. A historical black college, that has been given the top honor of producing the most black-americans with four year degrees out of any other college in the United States. According to Diverse Issues in Higher Education, which ranked universities solely by the number of students who graduate during a school year, FAMU conferred bachelor’s degrees on 1,256 students in the 2006-2007 school year. FAMU boasts a student population of 13,000, and is the nations largest HBCU. This recognition is the second PR blast for the Florida university in recent years. Will and Jada Have Their Own School

Will and Jada are moving past the realm of the big-screen. The couple has planned to open up a school called "The New Village Academy" in Calabasas, California. The Smiths have home-schooled their children Jaden 9, and Willow 7, for about six years, and found that by doing so, they can open up a new horizon of education for other kids as well. The school will be a private institution that will focus on technology and learning by doing (whatever that means). Will was on Live With Regis & Kelly, and stated that his own experiences with his kids and education is what inspired this idea.

"There are just very powerful educational concepts that we believe in, and we feel like we want to design the system that revolutionizes public education.” Smith said.

The school will open this fall on September 3, and will host prekindergarten through sixth grade students. The school will also provide laptops to each student, as well as all organic, low-fat, sugar free meals. Daaaaaaaang! I am so not mad at them for this. This is wonderful news!
