Marvel Comics "Iron Man" hit the big screen this weekend racking in $200 million worldwide. Here in the states, it pulled in a little over $100 million, making it the 10th biggest to happen in Hollywood history and the largest opening for a film that wasn't a sequel.
The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr. who plays Tony Stark, Gweneth Paltrow as Starks' assistant, and Terrance Howard as Jim Rhodes, Iron Mans partner . Downey, Jr.'s character is a eccentric billionaire playboy who invents a high tech suit of armor that turns him into a superhero.
We all know Robert Downey, Jr. from movies such as U.S. Marshalls, Zodiac, Gothika, and Natural Born Killers. But we also know him from the news headlines for being a drug addict. This film is Downey's biggest successful film since his return to the big screen after battling his drug addictions. Since those days, Downey has received great reviews for films that he's done, but none of them compare to how much success and notoriety he'll receive from this one.
Iron Man beat critics estimates of opening at $70 to $80 million.
