Actress Adopts Black Baby

Speaking of adopting babies, actress Joely Fisher (''Til Death, Desperate Housewives) has taken a cue from Banjelina and Madonna and has adopted a baby of her own. But instead of looking outside of the United States, she's found a baby girl here in Los Angeles.

Joely Fisher and hubby Chris Duddy adopted an African American infant in September and named her Olivia Luna.

"Joely and Chris were inspired by Angelina and Madonna's decisions to adopt a baby from Africa," a family friend says. Joely even visited with children in Mozambique in August. "But after looking into the adoption process, they realized there were so many children in the L.A. area who needed homes."

Olivia is the third daughter for Chris and Joely. She joins Skylar, 7, and True, 2.

Oprah Winfrey's Mother Counter Sues Dept Store

I now see why Oprah Winfrey has distanced herself from her mother. This lady is way out! I did a post about this around a month ago when a dept store filed suit against the famed talk show host’s mother.

In the latest in this legal battle, O's mother says she shouldn’t have to pay a nearly $156,000 debt to the high-end fashion store because store officials shouldn’t have extended credit to her. Get outta here lady!

Valentina Inc. alleges that Vernita Lee of Milwaukee racked up $155,547 in purchases and interest as of July 1. The company sued, saying Lee fell behind in minimum monthly payments of $2,000.

Lee filed a counterclaim Friday contending that Valentina took advantage of her “lack of knowledge, ability, and-or capacity” when creating her credit account. Court papers say Lee resolved a 2002 case with the company over a $175,000 bill. The resolution prohibited Valentina from extending further credit to her.

A message left for Valentina co-owner Tony Chirchirillo was not returned Tuesday. Oprah... I need you to go check your moms!

Oprah's Mom Sued For $155K

I guess because I'm not a die hard Oprah fan, I have never heard anything about her mother up until now. Although the news isn't good, it's still news to report. Oprah's mother, Vernita Lee, is being sued by a high-end fashion store over a past due bill of more than $150,000.

According to the civil complaint (obtained by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), Lee, a Milwaukee resident, has had an open-ended charge account with Valentina Inc. since January 2004. As of July 1, she has racked up a bill of $155,547.31 in purchases and interest, according to the complaint. (Lee was required to make a minimum monthly payment of $2,000 to the store, the paper reports.)

Valentina attorney Joseph Niebler, Sr., told the Sentinel that at some point Lee stopped making the monthly payments. He added that the store had tried to resolve the bill before filing the lawsuit and continues to pursue a resolution out of court. The store is asking for full payment plus interest, the complaint says. (Lee has until a Sept. 19 hearing to answer it.)

"There isn't any ill will, it's a matter of contract," Niebler told the Sentinel.

Lee has hired three attorneys to prove she doesn't owe the bill, according to the Sentinel, but when reached by telephone, she declined to comment.

Oprah and Lee lived in Milwaukee during part of Oprah's childhood.
