Common & Queen Latifah Make it "Just Wright"

Rappers/actors Common and Queen Latifah have signed on to star in a new Fox Searchlight film titled Just Wright. Queen Latifah plays a sports trainer, who falls in love with a professional basketball player, while attempting to rehabilitate him from a career-threatening injury.

The script was written by Michael Elliot, while Latifah, long time partner Shakim Compere and Debra Martin Chase will produce the movie, with Sanaa Hamri directing. Common, who is currently shooting Date Night, recently had a high profile role in the movie Terminator Salvation, which has raked in over $165 million dollars in box office revenue in the U.S. since being released in May.

Shooting on Just Wright is slated to begin next month, while the movie is expected to be in theaters nationwide sometime in 2010.

"I’m really excited about it and for me as long as I’ve been making music I always wanted to challenge myself. This album is a lot of free music, a lot of feel good music. I didn’t overthink the subject matters and made music you can dance too, ride out too, and have fun too. I wanted to give people something to smile about, enjoy, and let loose."

As we all know that damn near every artist has been vieing for the last spots for 4th quarter sales and releases, Common explained his own push-back.

"I originally was starting this album as an EP which was like a six song collection of songs. It was called Invincible Summer and I wanted to bring it out during the summertime. I did this film Terminator Salvation and I couldn’t finish the album in period I wanted to. I said, 'Man Universal Mind Control is the perfect title for the sound of the music. UMC fits the theme of what the album is about. That sounds like something from back in the days to something futuristic. Why do you support Barack Obama? After all, he’s politician, too.

On a practical level, we’re dealing with a lot of hard times and struggles. I see Barack Obama as a beacon of light because, more than anything, I see him promoting love. Of course he’s a politician, working within a system, but he’s been able to show us that we can’t be caught up with old prejudices or focus so much on negative things. I believe that this guy is gonna do right for us because he’s paying attention to middle-and-lower-class people, to-black and Latino, so-called minorities.
